Crazy Red Algae ID Required *pics*

Has anybody here won the battle against this aglae? It's taking over my tank FAST!

I do 20% water changes every 2weeks but recently started doing 50% to see if it would make a difference. So far no luck. I got 10 zebra turbo snails and they wont touch it. I tried two red emeralad crabs and they do eat it but they are slow. I would need 800 of them to make a difference. lol

I just tested my water and got the following results. The cal, alk and mag do not fluctuate because I dose them daily with a GHL Profilux controller with dosers.

    Cal - 445
    Alk - 12dkh
    Mag - 1350
    Phospahtes - 0
    Nitrates - 0
    Ph - 8.2
    Salinity - 1.026
    Temp - 80F

29g Biocube, 2x90w Aqua Illumination LED light modules, Vortech MP20, Sapphire BC29 skimmer, GHL Profilux Plus II with 3pump doser.

looks like red gracliaria, AKA tang delight.

    is it spreading???

    does the CUC touch it??

id say try to give it to someone with a tang ( i'd love it but the drive would kill me ) or try to get your hermits to eat it, they'll like it too.

I posted this same thread on RC and I got the same ID.

So far my CUC has not touched it. I picked up a seahare and tuxedo urchin from Marinescape today. Hopefully they eat it. :b9:

I had a sailfin tang that ate that stuff. If you have tangs try starving them they might just go for a taste and like it.

Good Luck. Looks like the same algae I had. I have three tangs that wouldn't touch it also a rabbitfish ignored it. Tried various snails with no luck. I installed a phosban reactor and continually ran it to keep the algae at a minimum. If I happen to neglect changing the media I can see the algae start to return.

i added a sea hare to attack the hair algae and it ate all the red--very quickly before it even touched the green.

I have a lottt of that stuff on my frags! I've lost quite a bit because of them.

I had a powder brown on a mission to destroy it and it did, it also picked at buble algae.

I need more help tho, maybe a seahare but i'll look them up.

The seahare I tried was probably already starved when I got him. He would not even eat noori and lived less than 1week.

I have two urchins and one is more interested in eating the red algae than the other. I got pretty desperate and picked up a 2" yellow tang to wipe it out and so far he has made the biggest dent. I will need to get a fish trap from Patrick to get the tang out in a few weeks.
