I received the exact same tank for Christmas... so forgive all the questions:

What hardware are you using? Skimmer, lights, and are those Maxijets?

How much live rock and sand did you purchase? I want to get my system cycling ASAP so I can show my wife and son why I wanted an aquarium again.

The scallop was bought on november 27th and not shown any loss of color except for when it was first bought, and i knew nothing about it (don't buy pets as gifts). I then went on a hunt for live phyto, I only found large bottles of DTs and so i bought dead phyto in a bottle. I feed the phyto, just started marine snow, and cross my fingers. He moves about but has recently taken to that spot for a week or so and is anchored well. he's looking phenominal (sp?).

all the info on hardware in detail can be found on aquariumpros.ca just look up my username.

    but a quick rundown-
    3 T5HOs 1 actinic, 1 day, 1 50/50

    30+ pounds of LR
40 pounds of argonite sand (unnescessary- you only need enoug hto cover the bottom in a small tank, oolite for a DSB)
skimmerless/skimmer was recently removed to down/upgrade was a jebo 180

the powerheads are three Hydor Koralia, one is a nano, 1, and a 2.
the 2 is pointed up at the surface to keep a film from forming.

    i use a fluval 202? canister filter.

the one piece of advise i can offer is to drill the tank now and save yourself the problem later. even if you dont use a sump, you can plug the bulkheads, when you get to the point where you say, i wish i had a refugium or sump or RDSB you dont need a hang on overflow which fail and cause floods, you can do it. plus it allow for an overflow and you can hide you skimmer and heaters, i wish i had done this.

Thank you for the advice... I'm honestly scared to drill myself... Is there any LFS in Toronto that do this? Guess I will watch some more examples on YouTube...

go to a glass shop just look at the yellowpages for a glass shop. ask around for the sizer bulkhead and accompanying hole first though.
