    Mata Tang

Picked up a Mata Tang/elongated surgeonfish at my LFS recently and having a hard time finding any info on it anywhere. Consulted many books and google searches. Anyone know anything about this species?

quite a beautiful fish.. and a good tank mate.
quite hardy.. pretty much top of its genus.
one thing to keep in mind.. he'll grow really really big in nature, he reaches sometimes over 20" in captivity ~12-13".
    I assume you got him at the med/large store size ( 2-4" ) ?

You better have a big tank and good setup.
As he will eat like a pig ( like most tangs he he ) I'd recommend 100g tank minimum.. preferably long.. like 6feet so he can make some burts of speeds.
if he's tiny, you may be able to keep him in a 55-75g for a little while ( a year of two ) but he'll eventually either outgrow it or die from stress.

Hope I was not too negative... was not my point.
Just hope you got the system to provide for this little guy

    Hope this helps

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

Post specs of your tank if you can... it would help with our comments.

( i'm taking the necessary precautions.. lol )

he he.. still a really big tang 18-20" in the wild.
hope he's got the room to host it properly.
