    how did you calibrate it??

those numbers are not right, for now get someone to test it for you and look into the calibration.

for a reef optimum is 1.024 to 1.026.

doesn't sound right, what brand of calibration fluid is it?? are you sure of the SG of the calibration fluid?

When you drop water onto the glass make sure to close the plastic flap and squish the water with it. Hold the flap tight while looking through at a bright light.

This is the Pinpoint salinity calibration fluid of 53.0ms?... Should give you almost 1.026... Also, make sure your refractometer is totally dry before applying the drops. And make sure the syringe you use to take the calibration fluid is dry so that there's no ro/di water that could be interfering with your results to give you lower salinity readings... Do this, and what deafgoose says and turn that screw to 1.026. Clean and dry off the refractometer and try again on the tank. And when you're using your hydrometer, make sure you've got no bubbles whatsoever sticking to your pointer. It changes your readings big time. which is why I hate hydrometers.
