Where to get a car starter or rebuild one?

    Hi,

Maybe someone can help me here.
The starter on my car died the other day (not a remote starter but the electric motor needed to turn over the engine to start it). I've been searching for a replacement and the only one that I can find is at the dealership for $599.99 - ouch! I called Crappy Tire and they don't cary them. I called NAPA and they're $191 but are backordered. I called other parts place from the yellow pages and they don't have them. Does anyone know any place that I can get a starter for a 2002 Grand Prix in the Ottawa area or a place that can rebuild a starter? I haven't tried the scrap yards but really didn't want to get something that may be getting worn out and put myself in the same position later.

    Thanks,
    Joe

Call a junk yard, most of them salvage parts to sell for cheap. And $599 for a starter is ridiculous, when I replaced my corisica starter I got a rebuilt one for $120 US (I was in Mich when it died)

ya.. try piece recycler de l'outaouais in Hull.. i'm positive they got some and at a good price.. just ask for the car millage before they gut it out.
ya.. 600$ is totally ridiculous.. I'm really surprised crappy tire doesn't have them.

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

what does they starter do? Nothing at all or just make a whirring sound?

    The chevy's are "2 step"

it spins, and pivots to push the gear. This is much like the one I just rebuilt in 10 minutes following instructions from the internet.

    Total cost...ZERO.

You can't properly rebuild a car starter for zero... go to Canada411.ca and search for starter or alternator. There are companies that can take it and rebuild it for you. At least you'll know you have a GM starter that isn't worn out. They are usually about the cost of a used one. Or call Arnprior/Ottawa Auto Parts Can-ON(Arnprior) E-mail 1-800-267-7386 They have them instock. I'm not sure what the retail is on them. Likely $75 or less.

Do an internet search for rebuilding car starter....

There are some issues that can be fixed for zero.
Many others that can be fixed for less than $10.

I just "rebuilt" (fixed) a starter the other day on my first attempt.

The gear that cranks the flywheel was seized, this is the issue when your starter turns but doesn't engage.

There ARE instructions on how to fix that chev starter, I watched the video before attempting mine!

Here are some options for a used one:

Typically when a car starter turns but doesn't engage its a weak or cracked solenoid not a seized gear. I'm all for DIY but when your DIY fix leaves you stranded that $100 you saved will be a distant memory.

Yes, if it leaves you stranded the $100 wouldn't look like much, hopefully you can find a starter in some of the links I provided.

I'm just trying to help, offer up some options.
