Need your opinion on tank prob...

    Hello guys,

I need you guys to troubleshoot my tank problem. My problem is that most of my corals are dying and I CAN't FIGURE this out...

    little background.

    I have a 15G display and a 10G sump.
    ATO with 2 floats switch + 5G RO/DI water.

The display tank as about 20Lbs of LR and not sure how much sand but more than 10lbs.
    Sump has a 24Hrs light with some Cheteo(SP?) and a CSS65 (in sump/24Hrs).

Lighting is done with a 70W DE MH and a 36W CF actinic.
Schedule is as follow: 09:00 Actinic, 13:00 MH, 18:00 MH Off and 21:00 actinic Off.

    Water parameters are:

    SG: 1.025
    Temp: 79
    Calcium: 380-400
    Alk: 9.00 DKH or 3.3 Mq/L (?)
    Amonia: 0

Also I have NO bad ALGEA problem at all...

    Inhabitants are:

    2 clown fish
1 blood shrimp and 1 cleaner shrimp
    1 emerald crab
    5 hermit
    2 Astrea snails

    All doing good.

    Corals: NOT DOING GOOD.

Bubble coral - (location: side, middle of tank)
Frog spwan - retracted (bottom of tank)
Brain (not sure what type - from Ivan) - started to want to retract (kinda) (on sand)
Zoa (but the Red one is doing good) (not opening) (middle of tank)
GSP - losing some flowers (not all) (sand)
Pom pom Xenia - Melting. (sand)
Acan - lost a couple of heads (skeleton showing) (bottom)

Is my light a problem (less than 6 month of use), missing nutrients?

    Any clues.

PS: I did have a small problem with my ATO that did not break a siphon and brought my Salinity down to 1.023 (twice) - Is this a possible cause?????

    thanks guys.

    Hi Buckaroo,
I think your lighting is fine.
I would suspect either salinity or alk. as the cause for the problems. Both of these can have a direct effect on soft tissues.
I'm assuming you're just as careful as the rest of us and there is no possible source of copper in the tank.
How long ago did you have the problem with your top off?
If it was within a week, that could explain some of the polyps not opening.
If possible I think you should bring a sample of your water to someone else and verify all your test results.Sometimes there can be a difference in results from one hydrometer to the next. It could also be that your test kit isn't accurate or maybe there was a simple mistake made when testing for things like alk, ammonia, nitrates, phosphates etc..
Anyway, when in doubt, a water change is usually a good idea.
    Good luck, Gord.

Hey Buckaroo, did you add anything recently? When did you notice the corals going on the bad side?

I would say It started to get bad about 2-3 weeks ago. I did not add anything or dose anything...

    Also made big water changes....

I am starting to think either Bad salt of not enough nutrients..

that gives you about 3 months of running after a crash. I'd say that might be part of the problem. maybe you tank is still not ready and I don't mean cycle wise.
also, why large water changes?? if you have very little bioload then no need for large changes. thats a big problem in a small tank. new salt water can be very harsh. I prefer smaller spread out changes.

Even though this tank is old. It is still new in its present form. Also large changes of water on small tanks is not a good idea. If the DOC's get high before a change, then the dilution of them through water changes may make too much of a change in water chemistry for your inhabitants. Also check your salinity before your next water change to see how big a difference it is after your change. All the corals you have stated are not doing well are succeptible to salinity and alkalinity swings.
    Good luck
    Jason
