    Tunze Protein Skimmers

I'm doing research for the purchase of a new skimmer ($500-800 approx.)and came across the Tunze line of skimmers. I never heard of them having skimmers before and was wondering if anybody could give a review of them or any valuable info, good or bad! Also, this will be going on a system between 200-250 gal. located in a family room. Sump will be located under cabinet, so chime in with your thoughts on a quiet skimmer going roughly on this info!

It's funny you don't hear much about them! Tunze has a really good reputation with quality! I'm leaning toward the model 9015. It's supposed to handle 396 US Gal. and I'm planning to have a 180 w/ 77 gal sump. I figure I'll have approx. 150-200 gals( maybe off here) in the system and if you derate the way the site describes s 60%, then the tank would be covered for anyway I'd want to go! The skimmer has a input of 650l/h of air for a rating, so I have to check out others with the same spects and price!

I have a Tunze 9005 and its garbage. Either that or there is something wrong with it or the way I have it set up. It has not worked properly since day one. Basically the cup fills about 1/4 full, then stops. It only once ever filled right up, and that was after I took it apart and cleaned it out. It filled right up in a week. Then I emptied it, and it was back to square one.

Im running a 9010 and it works great. I've had in since March, little flaws with it but other then that its a great skimmer. I had to play around make the pump and plastic fit together right to make it skim properly.

Yeah try playing around with the fitting of the plastic around the input and the output. Thats were my problem was, I was getting a leak around the seam and when I wedged a peice of rubber hose to hold it in place it worked great after that.

    tunze skimmer issue

I was wondering do you clean the throat of the skimmer when you empty it?

If I do not clean the throat on my skimmer (not a tunze) it takes a week or more to fill, but if I clean the throat it takes only about three days

doing a search on the tunze 9005 skimmer on reefcentral.com you will find lots of info

I thought the same thing after a couple of months with my 9002. It did the same thing that yours does. I talked to the guys at marinescape (ready to go officespace on it) and they told me to turn it off for 1/2 hour to 1 hour each day. Well I tried and wow, it works. What they explained to me is that the intake tube gets glogged after a while (days) and to turn it off lets the salt build up and grime slide back out the tube. I was always having to adjust the thing before but now it works great.
    Give it a try.
