It all depends on the amount of water you want skimmed. 500$ doesn't buy much if the water volume is over 200g IMO. Coralife makes a good skimmer for smaller systems. I bought a used LifeReef and was very pleased with it until I managed to snag a used ASM G-6 which does an excellent job for my 580g system volume.

Ok. Well Im looking for a skimmer that would be overkill on a well stocked 230G tank.

I have an Octopus skimmer and I am extremely happy with it. I would look into those.

next one will be a DIY with a modified Dart pump.

I'd say stick to your "big name companies" IE Lifereef Euroreef, ASM, My God there are so many I know i'm forgetting some. Check out the buy and sell forms here and on Reefcentral. They have a great one. But you got to act quick. I got my skimmer from there.(Lifereef).
    Cheers,

In that price range, the best you can do is an ASM G4 with a recirculating mod. The classified sections are a great tool as well.
If my wife asks, it was only $20.

    Hardware:
220 Gal Mostly SPS Reef, 66 gal sump with refuge, 33 gal refugium, Gen-X Mak-5 Return, 3 x IceCap 250 MH, 2 x 110 VHO, Deltec APF600 Skimmer and a Deltec AP-600, Geo 6-18 Calcium Reactor, 2 x Tunze Stream 6100, Profilux Plus II EX Controller.

For 500$ I would try and find a used becket.
225g SSB display, World Fish Custom Sump/Fuge/Filter, H&S A250-2X1260, h&S sulphur reactor, Reeflo Dart 3600g return on a wavy sea plus, 4X Tunze 6101, Deltec PF600, Octopus 3000, Aquazone Ozone 100,
Lights: 2X250W 10K XMs, 1X400W10K XM, 6XT5s Al lights controlled by AC Jr.
