    Killer Hermit Crabe

    Yo,

ON tuesday night I got 15 new astrea snails. Since then (4days) I've seen a large blue hermit crabe kill 4 of them.

Is this normal for hermit crabs ? should I take him out ? He's huge and I'd really like to keep him but i'm afraid he may have to go otherwise my algae will never go away...

    Nick.

So far it's only snails ... I have heard of this before when they get too big.

A lot of people don't use hermit crabs for exactly this reason. I used to have several hermit crabs, but I'd always lose 1/2 my snails to them because they wanted their shells.

Which brings me to another point. You can try mixing hermits and snails, and making sure that you have empty shells around the tank for the hermits to grow into. The thing is, Hermit crabs are very opportunistic, and will still go for the snails.

Agreed.. the only reason your Hermits are killing the snails are becouse of the shell factor.. I bought Bag of somthing like 50 Shells from my LFS.. and dumped them in .. and its cool you watch them changing homes often..

Althought alot of people dont like hermits they are esental to the maintanice of a tank! ..

When they get too big i sell them off or trade them in for smaller ones!

I too have none for the reasons mentioned here. I will go a bit further and say I disagree with you Toooloud. They are NOT essential to keeping your tank clean. There are other things that will tidy up just as well. Don't have crabs..., don't want any!!! (Now that didn't sound right!!!).

I don't keep hermits either. I don't think there's anything a hermit crab can do that can't be done by another, less murderous, critter.
