    Half a coral missing overnight!

I got up this morning and half of this acropora was just missing as though it had been hacked off.

A couple weeks ago I noticed one morning that a small amount was "missing" but figured I must have hit it with the glass scraper or something and it was growing back nicely. This time I'm quite sure I didn't do anything to cause this and there's a significant amount of the coral just gone. I haven't been able find the missing parts anywhere.

I have a few small emerald crabs but I really don't think they would be able to cause this kind of damage overnight. Any ideas? Do I have something running around with a machette in my tank?

thats weird, i was over yesterday around supper time and there wasn't anything wrong with the coral in question. would one of your fish eat an acro?

Nothing in your tank would be able to eat that much of the acro so fast.. Polyps maybe.. but the acuall hard skelloton.. no way.. Unlesss someone is sneaking in at nite and fragging your corals!

Could also be decae of some sort? RTN? Not sure.. im not sps speciallist

It's probably hard to tell from the photos but it's not just flesh missing here. Literally half, or more, of the coral is just gone - skeleton and all. It appears as though it was hacked off. On any other occassion I might question my own clumsiness with tank maintenance but not this time. I was working in the tank before the meeting but not after. During the meeting someone else surely would have noticed, it's quite obvious.

    I'll PM Fishysan. Thanks Johnny.

Allo - I had that problem, it was a "gorilla" crab doing it. It was basically biting off the tips of acros to eat them.

Reeferboy had some odd behaviour like that till he caught a crab up to no good.

As soon as I eliminated that hairy crab, all was good.

Trying to search RC to see if I can find a picture but it's swamped. I thought reeferboy had posted one up.. maybe it was IJO?

I'd be on the lookout for crabs, or setup a trap near the corals that have been munched.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks. I'll see what I can find about these crabs. Dang. This doesn't sound like much fun to deal with.

WOW.. thats one HUGE chunk of acro missing... I found this in my acro tank but it was only eating the polyps... not the whole acro.

I got lucky and took out the acro he was in, but I had to break him out in pieces with needle nose plyers cuz he just didn't want to let go! Was too bad though.

    Look at night and see..

    Good luck Susan!
