    Magnesium suppliments

Just wondering if anyone else here has tried different magnesium suppliements?

i recently used SeaChem Reef Advantage Magnesium Additive and i found it barely raised my MG. its very low, when i finally got a test kit, it was around 800ppm, after following instructions, it was only raised to 900ppm..

any input would be appreciated. thanks.

I'm having great results with dolomite powder, the pure stuff sold at the ottawa natural clinic on O'Connor i believe it is.
my mangroves require tons of it!

Oh and I was able to raise it as high as I wanted.. ( 1300+ )
It nuked my string algea in weeks.
and my softies seem to enjoy it too.

I also doze bio calcium which has some in it too.

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

    yup thats the place!

    I got the ~300ml for ~7$
the bigger jar the cheaper is becomes, but i've had this container for ~4-5months.. so it lasts for quite some time. it doesn't deplete all that fast.
( with water changes and dosing bio calcium )

What is the composition of Domlite?

I have used Tech M, Bio Mag, Epson Salt and lab grade pure magnesium chloride. Each has its own ups and down.

I believe Seachem is just epson salts.

now that you mentioned it..... it looked exactly like epson salt haha i hated it. took so long to disolve in fresh water before putting it in tank.

Hmm, I have never tried mag carbonate, I will have to do some reading..

The prob with epson salts is that it is mag sulfate so you have to be careful that your sulfate levels dont go too high as they are naturally quite low in sea water.

Been using epson salts for about 3-4 years as a part of my 2 part calc, alk additives. Never had a problem so far. CHEAP CHEAP CHEAP. And yes it takes a while to dissolve.

Assuming you are not using Randy Holmes-Farley's DIY formulae for Calcium, alkalinity, magnesium, you can use Craig Bingmans formula of ten parts magnesium chloride and one part epsom, magnesium sulphate as seen in this article here.
