    Long Spined Black Urchin Spawning

    Hi All;

    Is this normal behaviour, and is there any hope that any of the eggs will survive?

    There's only one urchin in the tank so I'm assuming the eggs will not be viable (assuming it takes "two to tango").

    Thanks

    You could be right, but the small round whatevers were dropping from the urchin as I watched.

    That's likely the answer, but it was the round uniform shape and pale color of the expulsions that made me think it could be spawning.

    I'll chalk this up to simply a "dump"!

    very interesting, i believe urchins breed by releasing sperm and egg in to the water ( you are right you need a boy and girl ) but the eggs are tiny and females can produce thousands of eggs at each spawn.

    could you post a pic of the 'eggs'??

    The "eggs" dropped in an area that I can't see, so no pics unfortunately. I didn't see anything that looked like sperm and I think I arrived at the end of the process. Only saw 10-15 eggs drop.

    Just pooping. Ours does the same thing, he will drop small almost perfectly round "waste" every once in a while.
