who to catch mantis shrimp in tank

I meant "How" to catch it...

I just found a 2" black mantis shrimp in my 75G tank, which hosts 3 clowns, 1 yellow tang, 1 flame angle and 1 mandarin fish. I have no idea how it got into the tank - probably come with coral rocks? I am pretty sure it is mantis shrimp. My wife has warned me about some click noise from the tank months ago. The shrimp moved fast and tried to take a small "dry" shrimp from the mouth a clown fish.

I did a search online, seems a homemade trap is recommended to catch it. I am not confident about this because I could even find the bad guy in months and cannot find it anymore while sitting there for hours. Is it good idea to remove the live rocks, fish, and corals out until I found it? Anyone had experience in catching it? I hope I can remove it before any real damage is done. Thanks for your response.

it could be a pistol shrimp as well.. take a pic of it or look online and make sure thats what it is. pistol shrimps are reef safe and make that clicking sound.
if its a pistol shrimp, try to find its matching goby for a symbiosis.

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

and just in case it's a mantis be careful when you have your hands in the tank, they don't call them thumb splitters for nothing :b2:

they are a bugger to catch, a trap will probably work best.

We had a fair size one that came in a rock ! We tried everything to catch it.... I ended up removing the rock it lived in and tossed it in a bowl of ice cold tap water !
Oh it came out!!!! Lil' bugger!
Unfortunately a week later a friend at the lfs told me he would have bought it from us !

    Thanks for your responses.

Trap doesn't work well. I left the trap overnight, the bait was still there untouched.

I might have to remove the rock to find it.

You need to be a bit more patient with the trap than just one night.

Give it at least a week or two and remember to change the bait daily.
