Green bulbuous thingy on live rock

    Hi everyone,

I'm finding these green bulbuous growths ( approx 1/8" to 3/8" OD ) on my live rock. Looks almost like mini green balloons.

Any idea what this may be?

    Cheers.

It sounds like grape algae. You want to carefully pick off the grapes without bursting them. If they burst, you have just spread the spores all through your tank.

Actually, it's called Bubble Algae (Valonia). Vickie was correct about the rest though...
Here's a good link you can read up on.

Grape Algae is another macro algae altogether...

Sorry Tang Man. I was told that it was called grape algae not to be confused with grape caulpera, the macro algae. I guess it is the old story - different common names in different areas. Another reason to use the scientific name, I guess.

Thanks everyone, I've identified it as Ventricaria ventricosa.

Maybe my pencil urchin can lay waste to the algae of put close to the bubbles.

Since I got a lionfish I'm a little wary of putting arm in the tank

    Grimstalk,
I've posted this picture before but I'll show it again here to let you see just how big these suckers can get if you leave them grow.
