Most people run 12 hours. I do 1 hour of partial lights, 10 hours of full lights, and 1 hour at the end of the day of partial lights.

12 hours a daylight is pretty normal for most. Some as stated above will increase the amount or intensity of light shortly after the lights go on and reduce it shortly before they go off. The tank should however never be completely dark. Moon lighting or a night light should be used over the 12 hour main lights off cycle. It never gets completely dark (as in pitch black) over the open ocean.

it will stress them more. they like to be able to see there surroundings. get a black light or one of those nightlights.

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

thats too much.. you need just enough to provide them to see near.. so... thats why a black light or a small 5w lightnight is needed.. a 40w NO is way tooo much.

you could even put a colored led if you wish. as long as its wide beam and enough light so you can see the rock structure..thats enough for them.
