    Lighting set-up question

Hi everyone, happy birthday one salty dog (I know i am late of one day :biggrinbo... I would like to know what do you think about my lighting set-up. I am now using 1 175W 10 000K metal halide. I still found it l too dark, I would like to have the sun of the equator above my tank !!! I would like to had one more metal halide above my tank. My tank is 17'' deep and 36''
long. What is the max wattage could I go for the new ballast ?

A 250w bulb/ballast combination would do nicely. Or, you could add a second 175w bulb/ballast combination. MH bulbs generally have a two foot by two foot coverage area, so I'm betting your tank is a bit dim near the ends.

36" is an awkward length for lighting with MH. Normally we put one light for every two feet of length. I'm not sure you need another light so much as perhaps a higher watt light. I would think 250w would be good for a 17" deep tank. 400w would be brighter but may cause more heat trouble than you want to deal with on a tank that size.

Heck, I've got a 400watt bulb every foot on my 5' tank. I would rather see you go with 2 bulbs for more even distribution. I used to have 2 175 watt on a 4' tank and it was good, vo suplimentation though, so that kept the light spread out.

You already have a 175 so I would go with another 175 and place 1 each 1/3 from each end of the tank. This will easily light the ends of the tank and give a intense center area where you can put the real light lovers. It says 50 gallons in your profile so I will guess that the tank is somewhere around 18 inches front to back and if this is the case I would mount the bulbs 90 degrees to the front pane.
