RO/DI & Instant Ocean suplaments info

    Hi Everyone,

I was just wondering if anyone uses any supplaments after mixing RO/DI water with instant ocean salt. I currently only use PH Buffer but have found that my alk is low so I think it might be the low magnisium in the salt. What does everyone else use?

    Thank You
    Terry

I don't use any suppliments when I do a partial water change. After a day or two (when I am sure the in water has been well mixed into the old water) I run my tests (Ca, Alk, pH, NO2, NO3, PO4, Mag, etc as I feel is necessary) and make adjustments then. I firmly follow the idea that I don't add anything that I have not tested for and show a need for. Most of the time I just test Ca, Alk, PO4 & pH. If the Ca/Alk is low, I will then test for Mag and dose accordingly. I use this calculator http://www.kademani.com/reefchem.htm to know how much to dose to keep Ca & Alk in balance.

Vickie. That's a great calculator. Is there anymore like it?

There are a couple more that I've tried but this is the one that I like the best. Another link that may be helpful is http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issu...2002/chem.htm. This I found helpful to explain where I should be with Ca & Alk and what I should do to adjust. Everyone seems to have their own Ca limit - some 400 others 450, etc - I was confused as to what was the correct/best reading until I read that article. It gives you a nice range that is very acceptable and you're not going crazy trying to keep a constant reading.
