    Refugium substrate

I just got my HOT 18"x4.5"x12" fuge and I need some advice on the proper substrate. I plan on using chaeto for nutrient exchange. Currently my tank has crushed coral for its substrate. So should I go with sand, live sand (worried about a spike), crushed coral, mud or a mixture? Thanks.

Sand does work better than cc to grow the macro algae that will root. Chaeto and racemosa (grape caulpera) doesn't root. My tang heaven looks like it should root but so far I've seen no roots. I do have one caulpera that does root. Ulva is another macro algae that doesn't root.

Your HOB refuge is too small to use sand as a remote sand bed. My 25 gallon is a little bigger than the minimum that Dr. Ron recommends to be effective so I put sand in there (every little bit helps ).

Based on you getting cheato, I would say your substrate is up to you. You may find that the pods like the cc better than sand as they will have more places to hide and multiply in.
