    Xenia Smell

    Hi All,

I just purchased 90lbs of live rock which i received yesterday from someone who took down his tank. The LR is stored in 2 22gallon rubbermaid containers. One container smells fine while the other container which has rock covered in Xenia smells pretty foul. Is this due to the Xenia and is there anything I can do about this ?

Each tub contains about 15 gallons of salt water, a heater and a maxijet 1200 for flow....

please reply ASAP !!! would like to get the smell out before it spreads to rest of appartment !

    thanks,
    Nick.

If the Xenia is high and dry for sure! Xenia doesn't smell great when it is out of the water.
Submerge it, even if the rock is on top of it. It will survive for now.

Weird, can you get the Xenia totally underwater?
Could your live rock be having some die off in that container?

Sounds like it is a coincidence that it's the one with the xenia that is smelling....when xenia dies it shrivels up to almost nothing....any die-off at all is going to smell....just make sure everything is submerged completely...

a little live rock was poping out of the water and some xenia was floating at the top... i flipped the rock upside down so that everything is 100% submerged....should that do the trick ?

yup... kinda like really rotten sea water.

Smells even worst this morning... i'm hoping it's just from moving the rock/xenia around last night to try and make sure it was all under water... I completely removed the lid from the container this morning and put a fan next to it pointing towards the open window... either things should smell better tonight when i get home or REALLY bad... hopefully it's the better of the two or my girlfriend is gonna be really pist !
