    rock rubble

For my sump (and in general) is it better to use rock rubble (tiny pieces of rock) or better to use whole rocks? the rubble i would think would provide more surface area, but i dont know if it would be able to denitrify as well as a larger piece would. maybe its not big enough to have an oxygen deprived interior?

I'd say a mixture of both would be good if this is possible.

I don't put any rock or sand or anything in my sump. Just equipment. What's the benefit of rock in the sump? I kind of like it bare because at water change time I can easily siphon out any detritus.

    I do the same,
My sump is pretty much my refug as well. I would go smaller pieces. I notice pods swimming around little ledges and cave and in the sand I have so many feather dusters that are getting huge. I say small but also good to have open sand areas too.
