    Laguna pond media

My Eheim canister filter for the FOWLR arrived today. It's a big 'un! I forgot to order media with it so I ran up to Pets Unlimited and bought some Laguna stuff, it's these two.

The guys in the fish department assured me this would be fine to use in saltwater but I'm not real sure I trust them. I can't find anywhere what it's made of. The big ring things look to be porcelain maybe, very porous though. I don't have any idea what the smaller stuff is.

You think it's safe to use?

I would think that stuff would do the same thing as your live rock, just maybe not as well, but i'm still new to all this.

I use the ehiem 2213 canister filter & those rings are right
the other I not sure my smaller media is a grey porous material
& you only change 1/3 of it every 2 months & its reuseable
after . Mot to sure about the brown stuff tho think its F/W
only .sure on the ceramic rings tho ,dose either S/W & F/W.

Thanks guys. I have to get some spongey stuff yet so I'll see what else I can find instead of the brown stuff. I'll use the rings for sure though.

Ya, the rings are standard ceramic used in canister filters. As Dan mentioned, I'm pretty sure the brown stuff is FW only and not suitable for SW.

I have about 50 pounds of those little buggers that I got in bulk about 12 years ago. they can be costly but in bulk I only paid 39 bucks for the whole 50 pound box :-) they are a good filter media for wet and or wet / dry setups. they are great for evening out the water flow to avoid channeling. The ones I got were from Hagen and I have used them in salt water with NO ISSUES since i got them.

I have not used the stuff that looks like pebbles so I can not comment on them.

Thanks. I'm going to try and return the pebbly stuff. Sounds like it's for fresh water. I'll use the rings and get something else. If I can't find anything local I'll get this stuff:

and maybe this smaller stuff too:

Let us know how that stuff works out for you. If it really dose a number on nitrate I would for sure be interested in running it in my new reef setup.
