    Emerald crab

I bought a small Emerald crab last weekend, and I love the little fellow. He started eating algae immediately, including some bubble algae.

How big do these little fellows get? I have plenty of algaes to keep this one happy for a long time, and Am thinking of buying a second one, but have to find out how big they get before.

Would you say keeping two in a 65 gallon reef tank be fine?

My one cleared out all my algea in weeks. I have had to supplement recently, but he seems happy.

Actually it depends on if its a male or a female mithrax. The male gets noticibly larger with MUCH larger claws than the female.

I have seen mine eating bubble algae and scraping green algae from the front glass to eat it.

Have ou seen yours eating caulerpa macros?

And when small, how do you tell a male from a female?

Well, females have claws that are similar in size to the rest of the segments of the arms and legs. Males on the other hand have claws that are close to the size of their body. I will try to get a pic tonight of my male. He was banished to my return in my sump because I caught him eating some nice sponges.

This link shows a male mithrax up at the top right.
Notice the size of the claws.

and this link shows a female mithrax and how her claws are much smaller. I left the female in my main tank, but took the male out.
