looks like what is called a "Chili Sponge" but is not really a sponge.
this is not photosynthetic and needs strong flow. keep it out of the light to precent algae from growing over it.

a big change can surely shock it and bleach it.
i assume it would eat phyto, its little polyps open up when i feed it.

Alrha- how long have you had yours? I have always wanted one but haven't heard of anyone keeping them successfully.

The chili sponge has a dismal record of survival in captivity- Imo don't get it. They do expand polyps to feed, but I don't think they are very well understood in terms of what they eat. They don't need light at all and tend to just shrink away over time.

i agree. i got mine from petland during my newbie days (just saw a nice looking coral and brought it home) although mine did seem to do quite well - even grew significantly. i lost it because i physically lost it. it broke loose from the rock as i was fragging it, and then some small pieces here and there still show up from time to time attached to my rock here and there, but the main piece got lost somewhere in there.

Ya- that's why I haven't pursued it. It sure is pretty though. I really would like to get some red in my tank. Maybe if some bright red zoos show up somewhere...
