    Unwanted crab

I have a 20gallon marine tank on my desk at work. The tank was set up this past February and has been doing quite well.
    Except for fish....they keep disappearing!
Last week I found a crab in the tank....it's rather large, it's body is about the size of a loonie. It also has hairy legs.
Couldn't find this type of crab on the net, but I'm figuring it has a fancy for fresh meat! :-(
My buddy and I just finished removing all the rock from the tank in the hopes of finding the creature. No luck.
Shifted through the sand bed...no luck.

    Any suggestions?

    Patrick.

I also would like to know where you work to get a marine tank on your desk, or maybe you work in an office and you have a high class job where you make the descision to have one or not : As for your fish dissapearing, maybe you've got some jealous co-workers hehe (j/k, but seriously you never know...heh) :ummm:

In any case, Ive read through posts here that to get rid of hitchhikers(bad crabs, mantis,, etc..) on rocks when you purchase LR would be to dip the rocks in an elevated salinity water solution (1.030) for 2-3 minutes I believe, the high salinity will cause the creature to come out. You could try the same and when he comes out, remove him and replace rock in tank and you got your creature out! Im not 100% sure if this is the correct procedure as I did not do that when I got my rock but Ive read about it, maybe one of the veterans can comment on this..

it s probably hidding inside one of the rocks you moved. You can try to set a trap for it by putting some food in a high plastic container with a rock slope leading to it, the crab will be able to climb in but not out.... leave the container with bait in it over night... better chance to get him out...hope that helps

Gonna try the 'dip the rock in 1.030 water'.....
If that doesn't work, then I'll place a container in the tank.
    I'll get it! :-)

For those wondering where I work where I can have a tank, I work in the high-tech sector. My first tank at work was a fresh water tank, about 10 years ago. Never asked permission, just brought it in. The security gaurd saw me coming carrying the 20gallon tank and opened the door for me. I took that as permission. The rest they say is history. :-)
I changed the tank over to a marine tank last February to gain experience before installing a 150gallon tank at my house.

Yes, as soon as we get it out we'll take/post a picture.

I'm hoping to get it out alive...I was thinking of bringing it home and putting it in the sump tank. Thoughts?

Yes, post a pic when you catch him. I bet it's a mantis.

Is it a white guy with furry legs, nasty buggers!! If it is, I heard of them a teddybear crabs...I wonder who thought of that one. I had a run in with one, well not me personally, but he took out about 30 baby Maroon Clowns in a grow out tank. I don't know about the sump...What if you end up adding sand sifters down there, he might munch on everything. Get rid of him, could turn out to be quite an expensive little crab.
