    Power Planning

I've been successfully bribed. I get a new 90G tank once I've finished the basement.

The problem is getting power to where I think the tank makes the most sense is going to be a PITA and my alternate location isn't much better with it's single outlet.

So I need to figure out how many Amps I'm likely going to draw with a 90G set up. I need to get the outlets moved before I mud that section. I don't think I'll be doing much rewiring after the fact.

All I can say for sure at this point is that I'm planning on 2 250W MH lights for the main lighting, NO tubes to light it when the MHs aren't on, heating (2 x 300W or 2x 500W?), a return pump (Mag 12?) and a skimmer pump (Mag 7?). I'll use the return pump for circulation probably with a SCWD.

This is kind of chicken & egg for me, I can't plan the system with out knowing the power & I can't do the power with out figuring out the system....

Did I miss anything? Anyone have an idea how many outlets I'll need?

    Cheers!

Most people recommend 2 - 20 AMP circuits for a medium to large aquarium. Most electricians these day are also recommending 12 gage wiring over the 14 gage that we have been using for some time now. So meet both recommendations part way and run 2 x 15 amp circuits straight to where the tank is to be set up using 12 gage copper wire.

Okay cool that's sounding good with the numbers I came up with.

250W Ice caps peak at ~ 3.0 AC Amps (6A total)
Mag 7 ~ 1.3A Mag 12 ~ 1.6A so say 4A for safety puts me at 10 Amps. I still need heating & the NO lights.

    2 circuts should do it.

    Thanks!

    Cheers!

Unfortunately I dont have the 20 amp lines I need. I am running off a 15 amp. Without looking up the amps for each, I am running the following on my 90g, 2 x 250 watt Icecap electronic ballasts, dual 110 vho, Mag 9.5, 2 x 250 watt heaters, five mag 12's (includes skimmer pump). Only popped a fuse when I turned the vacuum on. Happened to plug it into the same line. Wont try that again (Vacuuming that is )

I thought of upgrading the line, but decided against it due to cost and near term building plans. I will be building in a couple years and will look at planning a tank in the new house.

    5 Mag 12?! Wow that's circulation!

I could up the circut to 20A but I should really change the wiring to do that & that would mean taking down drywall. I think I'd rather stick my finger in the outlet than redo the drywall.

I'm pretty sure my UPS can spare 4A for the pumps, leaving me with about 9A for NO lights, heating, and future toys. My wife certainly won't notice the extra extension cord behind her desk

I just don't know what the heating draws, but considering what you've got plugged into a 15A circut I think I'll be okay

    Thanks!

Fish would not even have to move their fins. Just surf rock to rock.

For my setup at home, I have 2 15amp circuits direct from the panel.
One circuit powers the lights (4-40w atinics, 2-400w MH), the other circuit the pumps and heaters. The pumps are connected through a UPS (provides @5-6 hours of run time in event of a power failure).
