    Lighting question

Someone was telling me in at Fish store in Barrie that T5 lighting was just as good as MH. IE it will reach the debths that a MH light will. True or Flase??

False. near the surface, if you have enough t5 bulbs, you may be able to duplicate the light, but not at depth. I have seen a couple of really nice sps reefs on Reef Central using only t5 lighting, but the tanks aren't deep and the corals are close to the surface. The t5s don't have the punch of MH.

    Cool

MUTTS bang on, T5 is very nice but just remember, its HO lighting, between NO and VHO. The good thing is that there thin and you can run 4 tubes easily with a workhorse7 ballasts. I was at Ivans last night and seen how he is wiring up his fish tanks with these very neat.MH is a point source light and penetrates the water way better as REEFMUTT mentioned.

I love T5`s but they are no where close to replacing MH bulbs Like Reefmutt mentioned good for shallow tanks but not for Deep tanks.

On another note I also dont find that the T5 actinics as good as lets say the URI VHO they just dont compare when comparing them to those bulbs,I havent used the ATI T5 bulbs yet, but when I get my hands on some I will see.

24 inches is for many considered to the the MAX depth that a reef tank should be... Not too many years ago when the 18 inches was considered the MAX depth. Of course we were not using DSB then ether so it really has not changed much.
IMO MH is the way to go as the first lighting purchase for medium depth to deep tanks followed by what ever other accent lighting you prefer or feel you need.

If I was to get 2 250 MH lights would it be possible for me to home clams. Would that be enough light for them? by the way it's in one of the 75 gallons from Big Al's.
