    Mangrove / skimmer

    I have a 35 gallon tank with a 15gallon sump/ref.
I added a red mangrove tree about 2 weeks ago. Now i am noticing that my skimmer gets almost nothing in the cup? anyone else get these results from mangroves? i know there are a lot of mixed feelings on this subject.

should'nt affect it, i have 14 and lots of macro and still skim quite alot... check your skimmer and wait a few days.

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

it takes mangroves month to start effectively exporting nutrients, i have 10 in my 50 and i still fill my skimmer cup, i'd say your problem lies elsewhere

    Cool

let me rephrase what FISHMONGER said MANGROVERS are basically useless in the saltwater hobby IMO. they are not effective in nutrient export at all. they grow VERY slow and need lots of light not to mention they can get huge like trees!!! plus you have to wash them[mist] all the time. macro algeas will out perform Mangroves as exporters big time.

hahah yah, they are pretty cool though!! I just got a bunch more from a friend who is tearing down his tank, but i'm thinking of putting an egg crate over the central part of my sump, and growing stony frags in it, and having macro algae under the eggcrate

I have macro and 5 mangrove pods in the sump. They are all gowing well albiet slowly under a 6500K 13watt PC. I noticed an improvment in the pest algae after I added them. Cheap, easy and natural filters!

If you consider the amount of size a mangrove adds in a month compared to how much macro algae can grow in a month you can see that macro will absorb much more them mangroves could possibly do

im not sure i agree with you ~fishmonger~

Mangroves may grow slower but they are much larger in size. i would think that a tree would absorb more then a algea.

No in the case of our tanks its not so at all, a full grown tree would yes because of all the foliage it needs to support, and the huge root structure but if you only have small mangroves, a patch of algae most definitivly absorbs more nutrients at a faster rate then mangroves, unless you have a huge number, i have used both and i test my tank weekly and i know that this is indeed the case for me anyway, and it should be for anyone
