    Introducing Sascha

This is Sascha. He is a 6" male Squarespot Anthias. I got him in a mailorder last Wednesday that came in cold. At first I thought he was dead but I thought I saw a gill move so I just dumped him in the tank. It seemed to shock him to life - he was eating 2 hours later. He has some very minor fin damage but otherwise seems to be in great shape. Sascha's appetite is just unbelievable. I've never had a fish that eats so much and I've yet to find something he doesn't like. His favourites so far seem to be chopped up scallops and the big frozen mysis shrimp from Piscine Energetics. He's very gentle and calm unless I don't give him enough food at meal time. Then he makes quite the fuss until he gets more. It's impossible not to laugh when you see it but he's quite serious!

I normally acclimate my fish as well as anything else that goes into the tank but this guy was very, very close to death. I thought he already was at first, he was floating upside down with his mouth open. I wouldn't recommend this approach except under absolute dire circumstances but I really think it shocked him back to life. Our order also had another anthias, a tricolor, that did die. It was for someone else but we unpacked the boxes at my house and I've been wishing I would have just dumped that one in as well to see if it might have saved him too.

Sascha is the only anthias I have. I know that it is kind of common knowledge that they should be kept in groups but I did some research on this and found an excellent article by Scott Michaels and decided that one squarespot was right for my tank. I haven't had him long but he's doing very well so far. A very gentle fish.

That fish is absolutely adorable. Are Anthias good reef citizens? Are they difficult to keep?

There's a good article on Anthias here by Scott Michaels. I appologize for referencing another board but I couldn't find this article elsewhere:
