i was wondering what temperture does everyone like to keep there tank at. also, include if you have a swing in temp when lights are on and off,

i like to keep my temp at 78, my temp when halides are off is 77 and about 78.5 when they are on.

I'd like to keep my tank at 78... but let's see...

During the night it drops to 77 or 76, and during the day goes up to 79... summer gets to 80-82.

In a recent article in reefkeeping magazine they states numerous research articles that said its best if you keep your tank between 81 and 82 for optimum calcification, so thats what i strive for

It seems I heard something about anything above 80 being bad for something I had bought for my tank - I can't really remember. It's very common for my tank to be between 79-81. The main thing is that you don't let it change more than a few degrees over the course of just a few hours. Too much temperature change can be stressful. Some is required.

I don't understand why anyone would think that a tank temp above 80 is a bad thing for a "reef tank" when the average temperature is over 81 degrees in the majority of reefs around the world

Tang man - Is there a reason you keep your tanks at 77 ish below their optimum conditions, is this so that if you have a temperature swing its more managable ??

    fishmonger,
Exactly. Until I get a chiller to keep my tank at a constant 80, this will have to do.

I need to look into getting a chiller sooner or later, do you know what one you plan to buy , and from where, i keep my tank btwn 79 at night and 81 during the day, but i'd feel much more comfortable keeping it at 80 or 81 constantly and getting the maximum growth out of my stonies, research by Prosser and Heath in 1991 indicates that for every 1 degree drop in temp you lose 5% of metabolic rate of corals, so the avg temp in over 1000 reefs is 81.7 so dropping to 78 or 79 im losing about 15%
