I think I killed my tank

I woke up this morning to the smell of coral. My skimmers werre going nuts and the ORP was down to 270 from 360.

While working on my tank last night I upplugged a little cooling fan near my sump. The end of the 6V adapter fell into the sump and I didn't notice it.

I am doing water changes an hoping for the best. I see some polyp extention and I don't see dead fish yet. We will see what happens when the lights come on.

I'm guessing from what you're saying that electricity got into the tank?

As you're doing now, I'd do waterchanges as well... however, not too much at once.

Lets hope for the best here...

I suspect that 6 V DC won't have done much damage from the sump. Low voltage DC won't penetrate far into the water column.

It might simply be a coincidence that you electrified a small area in your sump and your skimmers were misbehaving.

But, here's hoping for the best either way.

I am a bit worried that there seems to be some metal missing from the tip of the adapter. I am going to throw poly pads in and see if they turn green to indicate copper.

I haven't seen the tank yet, so I don't know for sure, but how many times has anyone pulled a smashed heater out of a tank that was plugged in all night? I have on many occaisions and never had any fallout.. I really (hope) think that this won't be a major one...
Bill, I can only get there tonight...we'll see..

I just did that, but my tank is still cycling. The onlything in it are some hitch-hiking zoos & some tiny brown, flat sps that doesn't seem to mind the ammonia.

I ran carbon for 3 days just in case, but aside from the expected algea out break you get in a 2 week old tank, everything is still humming along.

    Cheers!

    Thanks Matt,

I'd appreciate your professional opinion. Carol says the fish are alive. Is there any chance this could have been something less serious ...like a spawning event?

Something nasty happened to the water last night for sure!

    It is copper.

The poly pad has a blue-green tint.

The copper in the adapter tip dissolved over night.
