    nitrate levels...

what would be tolerated or considered as normal nitrate levels. I can't get mine bellow 5 even 10, with the salifert test kit. and with frequent water changes, 3-4 weeks.

10 is safe for fish only tanks but those levels will slowly kill off many simpler life forms. If you have or intend to keep corals you should be at or below 5. Try some carbon.

Yes .. your carbon is only as good as its remaining absorption ability. If it is left unattended it can become a good home for bacteria and then it can ADD to your nitrate issue.. Change it out as needed. Some will rinse it weekly and change it when needed.

thank you OSD I'll try this, could this be a reason that I can't keep any snails alive? The tank is now 1 year and 1/2 and none of any of my snails survive more than 4-6 weeks.

If you both are having issues with nitrate and everything else in the tanks is OK, then yes high nitrate or even nitrate spikes could be killing your snails.
