    Number of Hurmits and Snails

I have a 56 Gallon with 45 pounds of Live rock. 1 Clown, 1 Yellow tang, 2 shrimp cleaner, 25 Hermits, 15 snails, and 5 turbo snails.

My Astraea Conehead Snails keep on falling and I have lost a few of them. Some hermit have already taken over thier shells.

I am having some alge build up on the glass. It is brown color.

I was wondering what is a good number of hermits and snails to have in this size tank. Also is it OK to have Turbo snails only?

The rule of thumb is 1 snail or hermit per gallon of water.

But, a scarlet legged hermit is much bigger than the typical blue legged so, you can reduce the number a bit.

You should probably maintain a mix of 2-3 types of snails. No one snail cleans everything.

If snails are dying, it is a sign that something is wrong. Too much temperature swing, salinity off, nitrates too high, etc. You might also try using a carbon filter for a few days in case something unwanted is in the tank.

Do you know what your water parameters are? Is everything within reasonable levels?

Everything is fine. All parameters are fine. It is just I lost about 4 snails from my 15. I lost them not because they died, but because they fell and hermits came and took over!!

Ah, that is a different story then. ;-)

Maybe you need some hand holds on the glass for your snails. ;-)

I would still recommend a mix of snails.

Yeah I second cres's suggestion, you need a mix & I suggest cerith, nassarius, astrea, turbo, and trocus snails ideally.

But any 3 is a good choice.

    Cheers!
