yea i had the same problem, it was growing everywere even on corals. I decided to remove it all last week cause it was creating to much shade. All i did was take the piece of rock its on out of the tank and scrappe it off. Don't do it in your tank unless its a small piece cause it will spread it you don't catch it all. And it smells really bad so do it outside in the open, trust me!
    Good luck

The problem is i can't remove the rocks because the piece of rock its on is about 40lbs and connected from encrusting montipora to the other two large rocks in my tank

Get yourself a hypodermic needle and shoot the stuff internally with hydrochloric acid.
White vinegar will work also but might take a few trys to get it all.

Anthelias are just as bad if not worse than aiptasias in my book! I also have this problem. A few months ago I had taken out all the rocks I could out and thought I had scraped them all but alas... I still have some! Nothing I know of eats this stuff and it doesnt seem to mind joe's juice either! I have read somewhere (can't remeber where) that someone with an hydroid problem had covered the area with marine epoxy to choke them.... I wonder if the results would be the same for anthelias? I will probably have to go and try that route because I as well cannot remove the pieces of rocks affected by this pest (anthelias) I figured if I use epoxy and leave it there a few months and then remove it if it doesnt cover up with coralline the anthelias should have been choked up (?) It's worth a try I would say.

2 years ago i'm sure i was thinking, gee this stuff is cool, but after going sps about a year ago its plagued me and i've tried everything, i've also read about using marine epoxy and i'm pretty close to going that route myself

Yeah same here! 2-3 years ago it came as a hitch-hicker on some rock that had some yellow pollyps on it. I was thrilled.. a freebee!! cool! Now I wish I had never heard of such a thing as anthelias! and it's not even pretty .. it's plain brown!..lol grr let me know if you try the putty before I do see if it works..

I just bought some marine epoxy adhesive that you use to stick corals onto rocks, i'm not sure if it would work though, as its not very sticky, i've had limited success with a toothbrush, and holding a water siphon next to it, but its a two person job

I've used the Hold Fast Epoxy (AC has it) to cover/kill aptasia where Joe's juice failed. It may work in your case.
90G bb mixed reef set up in April 2005. I had 40g mixed reef for one year before that
