    Astraea Snail keeps falling over

I have several astraea snails in my 20g tank at work.
One of them constantly falls over and I have to flip it around. This happens several times a day.

Is the snail on the way out? Should I remove him if it is dying?
The other astraea snails are doing fine.

    Thoughts?

    Patrick.

When I dosed my tank with flatworm exit all my astrea snails started this kind of behavior. Their shells were sort of falling off and they were losing grip on the rock/glass. My guess is that it was due to the toxins that the flatworms secreet when they die. I took them all out and isolated them. After a day of running carbon and a water change I put them back in and everything was o.k. I'd say keep an eye on all of your astreas if others start to exibit this behavior it might be time for some carbon or a water change. If the others remain fine it's probly just this snail who's getting a little too old

    Good luck

    Steph

I'll do a water change tomorrow and run carbon for a day and see if that helps him out.
    thanks for the feedback!

If its just one snail, Id bet he is close to death. Got a QT tank? now is the time to use it.

This does happen with weakened snails. I find Astraea snails frustrating to keep. They do a good job of cleaning but I find they are very susceptible to temp and salinity swings. One thing you want to ensure is that your Alk is at the right level in the 8-11 dkh range. Sometimes a real cuase for this is when the dkh drops too low. I never QT snails but some do. I figure if they're too weak to survive they'll make a good meal for the scavangers in the tank. Just like in the wild - only the strong will survive! I don't see a weak/sick snail as being a cause of concern for your tank.

    Pat,
Snails are often the first to show signs of a water chemistry issue. I have learned to use snails as a gauge for things such as Alk, Salinity, PH.. etc... Make sure you're parameters are all good AND stable.

    Good point..thanks Greg.
I was going to do a water change this week anyways.

Funny, he was upside down this morning, now he's on the glass.

Patrick... to be very honest with you, if you always have to be there and monitor it to make sure it's the right side up, as your boss I would be concerned since your putting too much time into this and no work is being done.
    hahahahaahahahaha
No to be very honest i really don't know what to tell you but to make sure the little thing stays alive.
    Long lives the snail...
