    Are Purple Firefish shy?

I have a pair of Purple Firefish in a 20g reef. They are really shy. In fact they rarely come out the rocks. It's not because they are terrorized since they are the only fish in the tank. Do firefish normally behave like this?

I think that if you add another NON agressive fish to the tank that is outgoing and moves around alot, you might see the firefish come out more.
I bet they are just scared because everytime they pop their heads out of their hole they don't see anybody else. They think everybody has been eaten by some big monster fish, but if they see somebody moving around, they will think it is ok to come out..
    They are shy fish, though..

THe advice reefmutt is giving you here is sound, he advised me the same one time, I added a couple of other fish and I noticed an immediate change in the behavior of the fish I had in the tank,he became WAY more compfortable, now he dominates!

Reefmutt: That actually makes a lot sense! Big monter fish theory! Cool!

I have a 6 line wrasse and Pseudochromis Fridmani in another tank I could move to this one. OTOH, I would never be able to get that Fridmani without taking apart the tank.

the six line and the fridmani aren't exactly outgoing fish, but they may help. Actually come to think of it that six line could get pretty agressive as well...especially in a 20 gallon...what about a good ol' false perc?
...the fridmani may also be a little more mean in 20 gals..

My 6 anthias got my purple out. Now he stays out all day and even stands up against a hippo and a yellow tang.
