How many hours do people keep thier lights on? Blue and normal one?

There's always some light on over my 90G, the 2 1W moon lights are always on

But the VHOs (actinics) are on from 7AM to 10PM (13 hours)
The MH are on from 11AM to 6:30PM (7.5 hours)

I might increase the MH lighting to a full 8 hours, & leave them on to 7PM. I haven't decided yet.

    Cheers!

I was told the MH should be on for 10 to 12 hours. Is that true?

There are differring opinions on how long the main lights should be on.

But, 10-12 is a good number with the actinics on for 1/2 to 1 hour either side.

I'm currently running my MH less (6 hours) for heat and algae reasons, but, will likely increase as these issues get sorted out.

There's a huge amount of discussion & debate on this. To be fair 10-12 hours is the "rule of thumb"

However, many people (myself included) believe that the really intense light starts just before noon (about 11am) and wraps up around 6ish. Exact times are, of course also debated.

Thus the extendend dawn, and dusk phases of my lighting.

Some people on RC are claiming success with a 2 hour MH photoperiod. Personally I find that too agressive, I wouldn't go below 7 hours.

Anyway this is one of the reasons I'm actually interested in dimable MH lights. If I had them, my schedule would look something like:

    7am - VHOs on
    8am - MH on @ 50%
    9am - MH to 75%
    11am - MH at 100%
    7pm - MH at 75%
    8pm - MH at 50%
    9pm - MH off
    10pm - VHOs off

I don't know how practical that is, but I'm I find the idea interesting.

    Cheers!
