That crab looks very similar to a Sally lightfoot crab.
They tend to become unfriendly as they get larger though.

I may be completely wrong about the identification though...

Tang_man, I have to dissagree. Sally has flat body and long legs (that's where "lightfoot" came from).
However, I have no idea what crab is this.
Onlt thing I notice, it's an algae eater (claw tips flatened).
    Still, it needs observation.
FOr example, just beacuse some of us eat tacos once a while, it doesn't mean we are taco-safe. LOL.

Looks like the same kind we have, red eyes? We call it Brutus and he only eats stuff off the rocks. Its not a lightfoot.

The best I can say is that based on the body shape, spider like legs etc it looks like a Majid.

    http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2003-12/rs/index.php

"Decorator crabs are majids. While these animals are not as destructive of aquarium life as the typical xanthids, they can devastate an aquarium. I once had a decorator crab that persisted in tearing apart soft corals to decorate his body. This living decoration is often transitory as it dies, and has to be released. The particular crab I had destroyed several colonies of soft corals over the course of a couple of weeks."

All crabs, IMO, will eventually turn to the dark side and wreck vengeance upon their keepers. Others give tyhem cute names and actually feed them. Me I curse them and feed them to my corals

They are quite different. This crab dosent have the long spider-like legs, or the yellow bands... and his claws are huge!
He is definately from the spry crab genre though. All I can suggest is to look in the Grapsidae family (spray crabs, Runners, and marsh crabs). The marine atlas has something similar they call Pachygrapsus Marmoratus... anywhoo

The lightfoot WILL eat soft corals, guarenteed... dispite what this guy says. I've seen it on more than one occasion. The marine atlas warns "not to keep with senstitive inverts"

Thanks everyone! Thanks Catatonik for the picture. Yes, they are different. Mine is black and different shape.

reefsurfer, you bet how difficult it was to catch him.

I've trapped him in a container with a small piece of live rock, in the sump though. He eats both hair algae and meat! Will report further experiment results.
