    Banded blenny

Hi, I'm new to the site and to salt (6 months). I purchased a banded blenny last week (sifts sand through its gills). I found some info on feeding them - apparently they will eat mysis shrimp but he sifts the food as he does the sand (goes right back out of his gills). I can't find much info on this fish and I've looked at half a dozen fish index sites. Any one have a good reference or info?

    Thanks,

    John

Is this what you're talking about? "Large-Banded Blenny"?

They mention that this guy is a sifter, I hope this is what you're looking for. Also says he eats algae, and sessile inverts (probably what he sifts through the sand for)

    www.fishbase.org is a great site!

    And, you know ....

    to AquariaCanada.

From what I've read, Blennies should have a constant supply of something like Nori to nibble on through the day.

Thank you for the replies and the welcome! I've been lurking in the background for a while learning. There is alot of great info on this site.

The LFS (BA) told me it was a banded blenny but it doesn't look like that picture. I will try to post a picture tomorrow.

If he is a combtooth blenny (sifter) he will probably have similar feeding habits.
I picture would definatly help identify it tho.

Here is a picture: could this be a goby rather than a blenny? Sorry picture isn't very good.

Yes, that is a dragon goby. A very common sifter. He'll pretty much just dig his way under a rock and hover a few inches away from it, searcing the sand for goodies. He'll eat most small meaty foods you throw at him and a bit of algae if he gets real hungery.
