    which should I choose ?

I was thinking of an upgrade to my lighting.. I currently have 2 x 175 watt 10 k halides supplimented with 2 x 40 watt NO's. I have a few acros (5) all at the top of the tank - maybe 6 inches from surface and halides are maybe 6-8 inches from water surface (95 gal 24" high) with good/strong flow for them. I was debating on one of the 2 upgrades since the bulbs need to be changed anyways...

Choice 1 - 2 x 250 watt XM 10k bulbs with new dual ballast and keep my current 2 x 40 watt attinics... Tank will look more yellow becase of the weaker attinics

    Choice 2 - 2 x 175 XM 10 k bulbs but upgrade to 2 x 110 watt VHO super attincs with electronic ballast.

Choice 2 would be cheaper but what would the concensus here be ?

ALso do attinics play a part in the grown of corals or is it for asthetics only ?

I would choose option 2 if the 95gl is the last upgrade that you will do for some time.
The VHO actinics are going to give the tank a nice color.
Actinics are more than just asthetics they will give your corals a nice flourescence,as for growth you will get that from the 10k`s.

I'm in total agreement with Rob. #2
You have enough punch in terms of m.h. You will see a big difference in colouration with the upgrade to vho- the corals will flouresce a lot more. And the vho upgrade will add a lot more light overall without adding too much to heat issues.

Option 2 was the way I was leaning but wanted the input so I could make an informed discision...

So will VHO attinics over the curent NO's help color up SPS's as well ?

Well, mostly due the the extra flourescence you will get from the vho actinics. The actinics won't really make the actual colour of the sps change, they will just bring out the colours more. The XM's will make the sps colour up all on their own.

OK I'm off tomorrow to JL's to pick up the 175 watt XM bulbs (choice # 2) and attinics will be done for boxing day

Anyone have any last minute advice just in case I missed something ?

I use 2 175 W 10K XM's with 2 actinic vho and 2 10K vho and 2 65w 50/0 PC's on my tank. I thought I had good lighting before I added the MH's but was I mistaken. The first thing my wife said when I added the xm's was now tank light looks like true sunlight. Really impressed.
