    Bad test kit?

    Hey folks,

I have been testing the tank's pH, ammonia and nitrite since relocating it, so far no spikes, happy fish, lots of pods running around, minor diatom bloom about a week ago..

Last night I decided to test the calcium and KH/ALK and found that the calcium was a bit high (460) but the KH/ALK was through the roof! With the pH and calcium fine, is it possible for the KH/ALK to be so off? I did the test three times and it registered just under 30. There was sediment in the bottom of the Salifert bottle (red stuff) that did not disappear with shaking and the kit expires in 2012..

    Any advice appreciated..
    Cheers!

    sorry, what registered 30 ? ALK ?
in your 2nd post, you say 11.. 11 is fine.

red stuff at the bottom of a bottle.. maybe your test kit got contaminated.
they dont last for years... the expiry should more be about shelf life before use.. once its open, run it for max 6months then toss it... I find they get really unreliable.

EDIT: Oh.. and CA of 460 is perfect... regular sea water is 420~. so they have what they need... more doesn't hurt.. its just not beneficial in any way.

moving.. so temporarily out of SW :b8:
planning next tank, possibly 60x30x20 on 2x plasma.

OK, I read Ca was supposed to be between 400-450, good to hear that's ok.

don't worry about testing for KH. an Alk of 11 with a Ca of 460 is about right. if your not dosing, what salt are you using??? must be good :b16:

Really.. humm.. I recall reading (I think on this forum even) that IO was inferior to other products, can't remember what they were though.

Just plain ole IO sea salt..
