    Salinity Jump

I don't get it? I have an auto topoff thats working great[thanks vince]. I checked my salinity a month ago with my new refractormeter[thanks IJO] and adjusted to .26. checked today and I'm at .30????? what the? I took at 3 gallons and rechecked and it dropped back to .25 how could it drop with that small change on a 75g tank? and why did it raise.

Is your meter clean. Calibrate it again Johnny. In fact to delver lab quality results you should calibrate it before each use. That's what you would do every morning before you headed out if you were using it in the field.

I agree with Salty- also maybe the temperature has changed, too.
Otherwise I really don't know what to tell you...very weird.

Those refractometers have ATC built into them... I doubt its the temp...

You said "I took at 3 gallons and rechecked" I'm not sure what you mean... you added 3 gallons of clean water and it dropped that much? were you wearing your glasses or your wifes? hehe :

Make sure there are no air bubbles and all of the glass has a coating from the water sample... also make sure the cover is also sitting well. Don't forget to clean off the glass after each use.

Thats about it... if your still getting wacky readings... there might be something wrong with the meter.

Test... clean it off and test again... nothing should change. Hope this helps..

And take several readings at a time. Compute the average or toss out 'weird' readings.
