    Watter getting dirty

    Hi everyone.
Lately things have not been goinv very well with my tank.
Past couple of weeks I have noticed the watter in my tank is not very clean.
I notice at the top there is brown stuff flowing.
Also the watter itself when I took some out looked a bit brown.
Rock and windows are getting covered by some brown purple algae. I don't beleive it is a diatom because it is in a dust form.
When I clean the glass it looks like brown dust. The watter is a bit smelly too.
I checked salt level. It recorded a bit hight.
I am in a process of doing a 15-20% watter change.
haven't tested nitrates or anythign else yet.
    Doing that soon.
I was just curious if any of you have seen such problem.
The tank is one year and a half old.
    thanks everyone.

Brown dusty algae is a diatom. Your tank has fallen out of balance. The water changes will only be a band aid for this issue. i bet your sand is FULL of muck. Give a small 1 inch square of the sand a stir and I am sure you will see clouds of fine brown junk come out of it. however DO NOT STIR THE ENTIRE SAND BED thinking you can clean it in one operation!!!! Questions .. is your cleanup crew big enough to handle the bio-load on the tank? Is part of your cleanup crew the type that sift through the sand? When are you going to get a skimmer?

Well I had some some snails for very long time.
They got so big. I know that some of them died. So currently I dont know how many are in there. Around 5 probably.
Lately I see lots of small snails in the glass.
I also bought about 15 crabs. I don't think I have all of them either. That is about it.
Currenlty I have no money to put in the tank for skimmer or anything like that.
I think all this resulted due to the lack of water change and overfeeding.
Lately I have been very busy and haven't been able to take care of them. My father likes to fill the fish with food. So that ofverfeeding might have caused all this.

As I mentioned earlier I am in the process of a 20% water change.

    Thanks for the reply.

Usually its your nitrates that gone off wack. You should get a nitrate test and check it out. It might shock you.

I think you need some TRUE sand sifters in there. Baring that you can vac about a few square inches of the sand every water change until you have cleaned it all. This dose however have to be done with CARE or you could upset the tank even more.

What about make up water. Do you have an r.o. unit or other method of getting pure water for top off and water changes?
It looks like the tank could use a good overhaul- w.c., gravel siphon, addition of more cleaners etc...
