    Cool Kh/alk Salifert ???????

HI GUYS, believe it or not, I just bought my first SALIFERT test kit. I'm a little confused???
my ml's in step 5 read 0.72 do I just read across the chart for results or do I need additional math???
dKH would be 4.5 and ALK would be 1.60.
CAL is around 380. anything seem out of wack and what numbers are good to aim for.

I guess 8 dkh would be more like it.

    Johnny,

You're reading it right. There's no additional math to do.
That said, your reading is quite low.

I usually aim for around 8.3-9.0 dkh (reading of .48 to .44ml on dropper).

CAL is also a little low as you know. I usually aim for 400-420.

    Cool

cool, so then I should slowly bring up my CAL, and then ALK. and will bringing up my CAL actually affect my ALK? I assume it will.

I'd bring Alk up first, and adjust CAL afterwards if needed.

if you use the half test for the silifert kits , do you just double it to get your measurment?

Yes, if you use the low resolution test then take your reading and convert it to alk/dkh and double that value.

Johnny Rock are you sure you didn't use the low res method?

Best thing to do if you want to avoid confusing yourself is to select the method you are going to use either high or low resolution, and highlight that method for each step in the test.

Raising Alk will push down Ca and raising Ca will push down Alk. They should both be added evenly (but on opposite days or at least say 30 min apart).
4 Alk and 400 Ca is a good target.

Albert, this is not true- using a calcium supplement will not lower alk, nor vice versa. Unless you are using excessive amounts of kw to raise one or the other. Any buffer or calcium additive used in moderation will not affect the other. Unless one's reading are already sky high.
Johnny- your alk is way low and calcium isn't so bad. I'd bring up the alk first to a basic acceptable minimum- 7-8 dkh, then raise the calcium, and then continue to raise the alk to somewhere between 9-12 dkh.

According to Randy Holmes-Fraley's article (http://www.advancedaquarist.com/issues/nov2002/chem.htm), your tank would be in Zone 2. HIs advice is to use balanced additives until levels get back in the target range.

BTW, in that article, he also states: If, for example, you add too much of a calcium supplement, you will drive down alkalinity as you get precipitation of calcium carbonate in the tank. Likewise, adding too much of an alkalinity supplement can result in reduction of calcium.
