Albert, kw is indeed a balanced additive. BUT adding too much of it too quickly can and will reduce calcium levels and or alkalinity, through precipitation.

Adding a calcium supplement (for example) WILL NOT lower actual alkalinity levels. It will obviously change the ratio between to two so that the new ratio will have a lower alkalinity in relation to the calcium.
If this is what you meant, then I agree with you. If you are suggesting that, for example, I have a reading of 9dkh and a calc. of 360 and I add 40 ppm of calcium, that my alkalinity will drop below 9dkh- this won't happen. I will simply end up with a higher calcium reading in relation to the current dkh.
After re reading your response, I think we are on the same page, here.

Nickd's clip from RH Farley is in an overdose situation and not applicable to what we are discussing about calc/alk ratios.

Adding balanced additives in a balanced fashion is definetly the way to go. However, if one's ratios are not within the acceptable range, using them individually to correct an imballance is perfectly acceptable. Again, providing one level or the other isn't way too high.
